“Are You Feeling
Squeezed Into A Home You’ve Outgrown or Are You
Just Plain Tired of the Look of the Home You Are
In?”
Homeowners are tired of
living in houses that are too small for their needs. Some
are just plain tired of the look of their home, but they
don’t want to move because they love the neighborhood
that they are in.
Many have found that remodeling,
not relocating, is the answer to their problem.
Americans will
spend nearly $233 billion on home remodeling this year,
according to the National Association of Home Builders’
(NAHB). “Remodeling continues to show strength
despite the housing slowdown,” said NAHB Remodelers
Chairman Mike Nagel, CGR, CAPS.
However, the problem is
that people are intimidated by the whole
process of
finding a designer, designing the project, choosing finish
materials, and finding a general contractor they can count on
to see their project through to the end result.
It doesn’t have to be that
complicated. Here is an example of how one family avoided
getting trapped in the remodeling maze.
The Sime family owns a home that
they built in the 1990’s. At the time, they were on
a tight budget, which made them cut some corners that they
didn’t want to. They built a walk-in closet that was
much too small for people who enjoy clothes. In addition,
they built the living room that had a ceiling that was two
stories high. For Mr. Sime, who is a band director, this
was unbearable, due to the terrible acoustics this created when
they were listening to music.
They decided to enlarge the
walk-in closet and to add a bonus room in the area over the
living room to improve the acoustics of that room. In
addition, they decided to change the front entry to a
wrap-around porch and increased the size of the dining room for
more comfortable entertaining. The change was so dramatic
that their neighbors and friends have commented that it
doesn’t even look like the same house. “We love
our new home. We are enjoying very much.” Dave
& Vicki Sime
Much like we did for the
Sime’s, it is possible to enjoy the well established
neighborhood you are living in now and not have to face
the hassle of moving or putting your kids into different
schools.
Here are some things you
should consider to simplify selecting a
Remodeler:
- Is the company registered with the Construction Contractors Board (www.oregon.gov/CCB)
- Does the contractor respond promptly to phone calls and messages?
- Is he on time to meetings and does he come prepared to answer questions?
- Will he furnish references from past clients for whom he has recently done work?
- Do they have an “in house” design team so that you can easily view the changes you want to make?
- Has the contractor kept up to date with the newest methods and materials through additional education courses?
